Frequently asked questions about the collector
What does AC mean for photovoltaics?
In photovoltaics, "AC" refers to alternating current. Photovoltaic systems (PV systems) initially generate direct current (DC) from sunlight. This direct current cannot be fed directly into the public grid or used by most household appliances, as these work with alternating current. It is therefore necessary to convert DC to AC.
Can an AC-coupled photovoltaic system also use a battery storage system?
Yes, an AC-coupled photovoltaic system can easily be combined with a battery storage system. In this case, the alternating current (AC) is converted back into direct current (DC) by the inverter in order to be stored in the battery. When required, the stored electricity is converted back into alternating current to be used in the household or fed into the grid. This flexibility enables efficient utilisation and storage of solar energy, even when the sun is not shining.
What does AC coupled mean?
In an AC-coupled system, the electricity is integrated and distributed after it has been converted into alternating current. This means that different energy sources or consumers are connected to each other on the AC side.
How does the inverter in a photovoltaic system work?
The inverter is a central element in a photovoltaic system. It converts the direct current (DC) generated by the solar modules into alternating current (AC), which is necessary for use in the household and for feeding into the power grid. Without this conversion, the electricity generated would not be compatible with most electrical appliances and the power grid. The inverter also ensures synchronisation with the grid frequency and voltage to guarantee a stable and reliable feed-in.
