Frequently asked questions about the transformer station for BESS

Your questions - Our answers about the transformer station for battery storage systems (BESS)

A transformer station for BESS is a specially configured compact station that connects battery storage systems safely and efficiently to the public electricity grid. It ensures that the energy stored in the BESS is transformed to the correct voltage and can be safely fed into or withdrawn from the grid. Without a transformer station, a direct connection between the battery storage system and the grid is usually not possible.

Such transformer stations are optimised for the technical requirements of battery storage systems: they offer a high degree of flexibility in terms of voltage level, support fast charging and discharging processes and are designed for bidirectional operation. This enables efficient load management and increases the cost-effectiveness of the overall system.

Important information includes the desired medium-voltage level (e.g. 10 kV, 20 kV), the battery voltage (e.g. 400 V, 800 V), the maximum charging/discharging current (C-rate), the storage capacity (kWh), the desired power (kW/kVA) as well as the location and grid operator. The more precise this information is, the better the station can be customised to the project.

The delivery time depends on the complexity and the manufacturer's capacity utilisation, but is typically between 8 and 20 weeks from commissioning. The actual installation and commissioning on site usually only takes a few days, provided that the preparatory work (e.g. foundation, grid connection) has been completed.

Various national and international standards apply to transformer stations, including VDE 0101, VDE 0670 and IEC standards for transformers and switchgear. In addition, the specific specifications of the grid operators and the requirements for battery storage systems (e.g. protection technology, EMC) must be complied with.

Definition & Functionality

A compact transformer station for BESS systems is a turnkey, compact station unit that contains one or more transformers and other electrical components. It is responsible for converting the direct current stored in battery storage systems (BESS) into alternating current, transforming it to the required voltage level and feeding it safely into the supply grid.

Important components

Typical components of a compact station for BESS are

  • Transformer (oil or dry transformer)
  • Switchgear (medium voltage/low voltage)
  • Protective and control elements
  • Measuring and monitoring technology
  • Necessary ventilation and cooling systems

Differences to classic compact stations

While standard compact stations often serve as a transfer point between the grid and the end consumer, BESS compact stations are specially designed for the integration of battery storage systems. They often offer greater flexibility, customisability and additional interfaces for energy management and control systems.
