Frequently asked questions about transformer stations (FAQ)

If you have any questions about the installation, maintenance or operation of Transformer stations have a look at our FAQ area.
Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about Transformer stations, Compact stations and their possible applications.

A transformer station, also known as a substation, ensures that electricity is transferred from the high or medium-voltage grid to a low-voltage grid. This allows electricity from the transmission grid to be brought to a voltage level that can be used by households and businesses.

Transformer station / compact station from Faber E-Tec

A compact transformer substation is a compact, prefabricated unit that contains a transformer and the associated switching and control technology. It converts the voltage from medium voltage to low voltage and distributes the electricity to local consumers. The compact station is designed to be quick and easy to install, making it ideal for use in urban or industrial areas where space and installation time are limited.

The difference between the medium-voltage grid and the low-voltage grid lies mainly in the level of electrical voltage and its application:

The medium-voltage grid operates at voltages between 1 kV and 36 kV. It is used to transport electricity over medium distances, for example from substations to transformer stations or to large industrial consumers.

In the low-voltage grid, the voltage is below 1 kV. The usual voltages are 230 V or 400 V. The grid distributes the electricity directly to the end consumer. The medium-voltage grid transports electricity over longer distances.

A transformer station is needed to bring electrical energy from a higher to a lower voltage level. It is used to supply residential and commercial areas. In towns and villages, to convert electricity from the medium-voltage grid to a voltage that is suitable for households and small businesses.

In large factories or plants that require a lot of power and need a stable power supply with a certain voltage.

Transformer stations are used in many areas, for example to supply infrastructure such as hospitals, shopping centres, airports and railway stations. They are also used in solar power plants or wind farms to feed the energy generated into the medium-voltage grid. In short, a transformer station is needed wherever electricity needs to be brought to a usable voltage level.

A transformer is a device that increases or decreases alternating current voltage. It works by electromagnetic induction between two coils of wire wound around a core. Transformers are crucial for the efficient transmission of electricity as they provide high voltages for transport and lower voltages for the end consumer.
